FEATURE CAR

Whose car is faster?  Mark’s big block or Uncle Jim Holbach’s

 ’66 Chevelle convertible.   Hmmmm.

I bought this 1967 Chevelle SS in June, 1999 for $3,300.  I found it through one of my uncle’s friends.  The car was from Waukegan and it is a numbers matching big block with 4-speed transmission.  The color is the original Bolero Red.  The prior owner started a frame-off restoration but never completed it so I took over and it took about 2-3 years before the paint and body were done.

It came with a driver side NOS GM quarter panel that needed to be put on and some other little body work which I had taken care of.  I started driving it in the Spring of 2001 and on September 26, 2001, while coming back from one of my friend’s house going down Harlem Ave and a driver decided to turn right in front of me sending me into a street pole.

Needless to say I thought the car was totaled and I called around to different body shops and they all told me to just let the adjuster come out to your house and let them total it out.  The last place I called was Performance Restorations and they had a flat bed come out and pick the Chevelle up.  They completed a great job after the insurance company paid them 20 large (thank goodness for insurance).  It is back to new.

I just got married this past September 25 and my car was in my wedding.  While it was at the body shop I took the engine and trans out and freshened it up a bit.  The engine is punched out .60 over with about 11:1 compression.  It has an air gap intake, 750 Holley carb, MSD ignition and some head work.  Future plans include front disc brakes.
